3. Teach Your Kids to Test What They Believe

What do you think is required before an experimental drug can be marketed to the public as an approved treatment for cancer? It typically takes years of rigorous testing to demonstrate that the treatment is both safe and effective.

Christianity is all about “testing” any and all teachings to determine what is right and good (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Likewise, for your Gen Zers to know what they believe is true, they should learn to test it for themselves.

Here are three fundamental questions that you and your child should ask:

Are there any contradictions in what we believe? For a statement or belief system to be logically consistent, it must not contradict itself.

What evidence is there to support our claims or beliefs? An intellectually honest pursuit of truth will reveal if your belief can withstand historical, philosophical, and rational inquiries. If what you believe is true, your claims will be backed up by evidence.

How does a particular belief line up with life itself? Take driving directions, for example. It matters a great deal to have the right directions in order to reach your destination. If you input the wrong address, a GPS device will lead you to the wrong location. Similarly, your children need to make sure that their spiritual beliefs are taking them in the right direction in life.
